April 2025 Newsletter
Hello, and an alluring April to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter.
Today's issue is about vision and perfectionism.
Enjoy!
Vision and perfectionism
|
With the foundational book on vision improvement entitled "Perfect Sight Without Glasses", I felt doomed from the start. Although I was an exceptional student when I was younger,
near the top of most of my classes, my strained vision struggling behind my -10 thick spectacles was far, far from perfect. Just to improve seemed unlikely, let alone to be able to see perfectly.
|
Once or twice a year, as a child my mother took me to the eye doctor to have my vision tested. This involved looking at rows of ever smaller letters, in poor light, the dreaded "eye chart".
Most of the time I didn't do too well, so needed even stronger glasses, which did not please my anxious mother, or me. She worried about my "bad eyes" a lot, and I felt like a failure, again.
As well as I usually did in school, my self-confidence was seriously damaged because my vision continued to get worse.
|
As a youngster I practiced walking around the house with my eyes closed, memorizing the location of the furniture and doorways, preparing for my future as a blind adult. Since I kept needing
stronger glasses to see adequately, that's the outcome I expected. Years later when I discovered natural vision improvement, though I seriously doubted my eyesight would ever be perfect, the thought that it
could be better thrilled me profoundly and gave me hope.
|
A central principle of improving vision is relaxation, and I wasn't very relaxed back then. If perfect eyesight requires perfect relaxation, I had a long way to go! It quickly became obvious how much tension and anxiety
I was carrying, in my visual system and elsewhere in my body. My focus needed to be on letting go of strain to thoroughly calm myself, especially my mind and my eyes. The eyes are a physical extension of the brain, after all. Fearful thoughts
can negatively affect the vision, while a peaceful mindset will allow for greater clarity.
|
The perfectionist in me who was dissatisfied with a grade of 99% in school had a hard time with vision improvement. Perfect vision, or even perfect relaxation, seemed unattainable, at least any time soon. I decided to look for little bits of "perfection"
to satisfy myself that I was making acceptable progress. Maybe I could invite a brief flash of clarity, even if it didn't last for long. Or perhaps I could occasionally see "perfect black" when palming. Both of these felt out of reach at the start,
although I could imagine them. I've since achieved both of these intermediate goals.
|
The image of the man creating a stairway out of thin air, then climbing it, feels a bit like my vision journey. I continue to go upward, improving both my eyesight and my sense of calm, although I'm often not sure what the next step will bring.
I haven't done this perfectly, to be sure, since sometimes I stumble, or even briefly fall back to a lower step. However I keep going, at my own pace, as the view around me grows richer, clearer, and more vibrant and expansive. Please appreciate the bounty of your own vision,
whatever its condition, seeing it for the treasure and gift it is.
