March 2025 Newsletter

Hello, and a magnificent March to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue is about recharging your energy. Enjoy!

How do you recharge?
girl reading In this depressing late Winter weather with the excitement of the holidays long past and everyone eager for Spring, I'm encountering many folks who already feel burned out. Maybe they're working too hard having jumped right back into the fray without enough vacation, not getting the rest and enjoyment they needed, or they and their family all have the flu. Whatever the cause, their visual system, and the rest of them too, feels under pressure to perform when they may just want to go to bed! This got me to thinking about how I recharge my personal battery, since the weather affects me too and I can't wait for Spring to start.

The girl reading quietly on the sofa could have been me as a child, except that I had thick eyeglasses. I still love to read, and it's one of my favorite ways to "refill my tank", so to speak, whether I'm learning something new or immersed in an entertaining story. This doesn't work for everyone, though. For those who need something more active to rev up their metabolism and get their blood pumping a bit, some kind of physical exercise, even a brisk walk, might be the ticket.

NBC peacock Speaking of exercise, after spending all morning today at the computer, I went for a walk in the 35-degree foggy mist. Yes, the old snow from a few weeks ago was starting to soften and expose the edges of the lawns, muddy and messy, but this is what Spring is like here. The famous poem from e.e. cummings talks about "mud-luscious" and "puddle-wonderful". I was in a much better mood when I came back inside, despite the dreary weather. This always happens when I spend time in Nature, whether it's a traditional "lovely day" or not.

Once I got deeper into vision improvement and started making it a part of my life, I found that I could uplift my energy and mood by doing something which made my vision happier. Sometimes just looking at a brightly-colored image would do it, or a happy child. The practices which made my visual system calmer, like palming, relaxed the rest of me too, and doing the Long Swing loosened my neck and shoulders which I hadn't even realized were tense. So-called "vision practices" benefited my entire body, as well as my mood.

Julia Cameron attention / delight quote A big Life learning, which came later than I wish it had, was that even when I can't choose my circumstances, I can choose my attitude. It may be that wearing that strong prescription all those years kept me from seeing the vast possibilities before me, keeping me too compliant, too accepting of the status quo. Just because others are complaining about the weather or their troubles, I give myself permission to have a sunny disposition, satisfied with my good-enough, still-improving vision.

One of my last tasks for the day, before I shut off the computer, is writing a short gratitude note to a friend across the country about what went well during the day. This always makes me feel better, even if the list is pretty mundane. Being grateful and looking for the good in a situation which seems like a problem is a sure way to energize myself to feel more in control and less like a victim. Most little road blocks in life are not disasters, just inconveniences, and they often teach us something which a smooth path forward wouldn't have. Think how you've grown from dealing with challenges, even though you may not have chosen them. Appreciate yourself, and where you are right now.
