Mid-January 2025 Newsletter
Hello, and a miraculous Mid-January to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter.
Today's issue is about how the eyes are part of your body.
Enjoy!
Your eyes are part of your body
|
If your eyes feel relaxed and you can see what you want to see without straining, that's an indication your visual system is working well. On the other hand, if the bright light
hurts your eyes or you're getting a headache looking at that computer screen for so long with minimal blinking or breaks, the feedback your visual system is giving you is that it needs a rest.
|
When we overwork other parts of the body, we usually recognize it. "I pushed myself too vigorously in my weight workout at the gym, so need a couple of easy days now", we might say.
However we don't always take this same self-caretaking approach to our hardworking visual system. We are not machines! Eyestrain is a loud clear signal that you need to give your
visual system some attention. You wouldn't ignore a crying baby, so please don't ignore your eyes.
|
Often, when people's eyes are bothering them, their first thought is "I must need new (stronger) glasses". Not necessarily! Dr. Bates, the founder of natural vision improvement, said over
100 years ago that strain leads to eyesight problems. If you're straining when you look, the last thing you want is stronger glasses so you can strain even more. This will only add to your
problem. Although my body has been healthy and fit and well-functioning for most of my life, it took me way too long to start paying attention to my strained restricted vision, and to learn that I could do something about it.
|
Even though my cuts and bruises healed quickly if I kept them clean, it didn't occur to me when I was younger that I could support my eyes and vision to heal too. Just like the rest of our physical
being, the visual system can be poorly nourished or poorly hydrated, or overly stimulated and strained, or sluggish from too little focused use. Step back and take a big-picture look at your habits and lifestyle. Are you looking at
scenes that delight you, so your eyes are having fun? If looking is a bore, why would you want to see anything?
|
A neighbor often teases me that when he sees me outdoors, I'm raising my arms to the sky where the sun is, even if it's behind a cloud. My whole body likes being outside, where I can feel myself breathing more
deeply, using my muscles when I walk down the street, my eyes appreciating that there's a bit more daylight every single day now, which makes it easier to see. The farther distances are much more satisfying to
my vision than looking across the room to a wall indoors.

Each of us is surrounded by an energy field, which includes an emotional component. If you're absorbing all the negativity around you, then sending that back out, you're being like Pigpen in the Charlie Brown cartoon,
emitting a dirty dust cloud of gloom. Do what you can to give your body, and especially your sensitive eyes, enjoyment and relaxation. You won't just see better, you'll feel better overall. It's the only way to live.
