Learning and teaching
|
Many of my friends and relatives are teachers or professors, either currently or now retired. I've taught junior high math, a computer programming class, healing groups, and instructed vision
students. I've always been fascinated by how people learn differently, some needing to hear the information, some to read it, some to see it demonstrated then mimic that to feel it in their own bodies. Since
most of my school learning was from books and written words, I took that familiar approach when studying about vision improvement too.
|
Looking back, learning from the written word served me well in school, and I deeply enjoyed the stories I read in my leisure time which fed my imagination, allowing me to create worlds of fantasy in my mind. The vision improvement
books I devoured voraciously, looking for the secret to lessening my own strong myopia, taught me the fundamentals. Yet I didn't embody the learning, incorporating positive changes into my nervous system and eyes. I was
thinking about the simple soothing and energizing and focusing practices much more than I was experiencing them.
|
At first I thought my vision problems were only a physical issue, that maybe some of the muscles around my eyes were too weak, and I might need some type of eye workout, like going to the gym and "pumping iron".
I was willing to do this if it would help, though I knew I'd need guidance. Then I read that most of vision happens in the brain. I trusted my brain more than my body, since I had always been able to learn quickly. Did I have some sort of mental defect which
led to my poor eyesight, which I was completely unaware of?
|
Actually yes, though it feels harsh to call it a defect. Perhaps "blind spot" would be more accurate. I was so deep in the mindset that trying and struggle is the only way to improve, I wasn't letting myself just allow, and
receive the images which were coming my way. Instead, I was attempting to force them into clarity. Once I shifted my focus to noticing whatever was in front of me, blurry or not, then started seeking areas of clarity within the
blur, then smaller points of clarity within those, my straining vision began to relax.
|
After a lifetime behind a strong prescription, it was such a joy to look at the world with no barrier in front of my eyes, even when the view wasn't always clear. Seeing started to be fun for me, not work and headaches and eye strain.
After realizing I needed to "get out of my head", to stop thinking about looking and just practice doing it, as I would with any skill I was hoping to learn, the next deeper understanding was that this could be enjoyable. I had been approaching
improving my vision like a project at work, my attention on fixing something about me which I considered defective.
|
When I learned that relaxation is key to vision improvement and had to face how tense I was, I tried to relax which of course is an oxymoron. I pursued exercise, meditation, and other forms of energy work, but I was again forcing, not inviting and allowing.
Picture the joy and delight of a child learning a new skill, gaining mastery. This positive feedback leads to wanting to learn more. Like the quote above says, the relaxation will come naturally when you're having fun. Find enjoyment in what you see around you,
invite and appreciate the clarity you do see, teaching your eyesight that seeing well is one of the greatest pleasures of being human. See well and be well!
