November 2022 Newsletter
Hello, and a never-before November to you!
Where do you get your motivation?
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter.
Today's issue is about sources of motivation.
For many children, the grown-ups raising us, or the other adults around us, are our heroes and role models. They seem to be so skilled at understanding
and dealing with the world, while we know little and are often confused or overwhelmed. Some even grow up to follow in the parental footsteps and pursue the same career,
having learned it "at their father's (or mother's) knee", or join a family business, moving it forward for another generation.
Unfortunately, the young can copy negative habits too. Research has shown that if the parents and early teachers wear eyeglasses, children are much more likely to
"need" glasses too, thinking it normal, or even a sign of being more grown-up. Then it's only when the person outgrows the parental influence (if that happens at all)
that he or she starts exploring more healthy natural methods to improve eyesight.
Many children seek heroes from books or movies, wanting to be as strong as Superman or Wonder Woman, able to right wrongs and help those weaker and less capable.
Or perhaps a modern-day business icon like Steve Jobs, or a spiritual leader like Paramahansa Yoganada inspires us. One of my main inspirations for improving my vision
has been Meir Schneider, who was considered blind his entire childhood. Meir later learned to see with his eyes' surgically damaged lenses well enough to legally drive without glasses.
Heroes inspire us, lighting the fire of belief in ourselves -- if he or she can do it, maybe we can too! We search for those who have traits we want to develop, or who have
overcome a challenge we're grappling with. We want to know what they've done, so we can do it too and get similar results. As important as the specific steps
to follow are, so is the confidence to keep going. With my -10 prescription, other vision teachers who'd improved from -2 or -3 didn't seem to have (or understand) my more serious restriction.
However, discovering Meir Schneider and hearing his story gave me true hope I could improve.
Here's a thought - what if your favorite hero could be you? Can you look back over your life to find someone who believed in you when you were feeling shaky,
then encouraged you to tackle something difficult and you succeeded? Everyone needs a cheerleader, someone rooting for them against the odds. Tap into that energy
and see if it helps you believe in yourself more now.
Whatever the challenge facing you in the present, which may seem overwhelming when it's right in your face, try taking a step back to look at the bigger picture. You've accomplished
difficult things in the past, grown your skills, and learned, taking another step forward and up to be able to better cope with Life. Early in your life you weren't able to walk yet, or
read. I once couldn't see much of anything without strong glasses. Believe in yourself, and your ability to grow and evolve. You may end up being someone else's hero.
