November 2024 Newsletter
Hello, and a noteworthy November to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter.
Today's issue is about whether that gain is a true sign of progress, or just a fluke.
Enjoy!
Sign of progress, or a fluke?

Conscientious sensitive folks often "hide their light under a bushel", feeling reluctant to mention their accomplishments and successes, for fear of being thought arrogant.
If you have words ringing in your head like "Who do you think you are?" at the notion of talking about a personal success, or are overly afraid of bragging or of "blowing your own horn",
it's possible you're holding yourself back from shining fully.
|
Most parents raise their children to be good people, kind and helpful to others. If you're always talking about yourself and how wonderful you are, with no regard for what's going on
with anyone else, folks might start avoiding you. And we can also go too far in the other direction, never mentioning what problems we've overcome at all, when we could be inspiring others
to tackle and solve their own similar problems.

For quite a few years now, I've been sharing stories about improving my vision, the struggles and difficulties as well as my small victories over the dreaded Blur monster. I want to reinforce whatever
I've learned for myself, as well as prompt others to think about their own situation. During this sharing process, I've become uncomfortably aware of my tendency to dismiss any period of visual progress as a one-time
occurrence, probably never to happen again.
|
Even though it was clear to me I was slowly making strides forward in improving my eyesight, though they might be small and hesitant steps, I didn't trust it. I had no confidence I would continue to see with greater clarity and ease,
when I had kept telling myself I wanted this more than almost anything else in my life. Yet if I had a temporary setback, I'd have to resist the strong thought that it was a permanent reversal. If I couldn't continue improving steadily, never relapsing with a blurry
moment, I was afraid I was failing completely.
|
My attitude about my vision progress had become a mirror of the rest of my life, and the strong pressure I put on myself. If I wasn't doing it perfectly with no missteps, I wasn't doing it right. I needed to be gentler with myself, and fully celebrate
my little wins. Feeling more calm and confident when driving in challenging weather, or locating something tiny I dropped right away without having to crawl around the floor searching, were indeed feedback that my eyesight was improving, as well as my
visual confidence. It was high time I stopped ignoring this evidence.

If something goes right when you're tackling a difficult task, do you say you just got lucky this time? Or do you fully own your success, not bragging about it, but maybe sending up a little prayer of gratitude to your God, or that beloved deceased grandparent watching over you?
We're here to grow and make mistakes and learn from them, then teach others so they have it easier than we did. If we never share our accomplishments, we rob others, who won't benefit from what we know. Marianne Williamson said it well: "There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so other people won't feel insecure around you. We are meant to shine."
So go shine your unique light, big and bright!
