September 2024 Newsletter

Hello, and a spectacular September to you!
Welcome, or welcome back, to my newsletter. Today's issue is about whether to ignore situations coming our way, or to explore them. Enjoy!

Ignore, or explore?
child covering eyes Most people I know have too much to do and too much coming their way which needs their attention, from crises in the news to demands from coworkers or bosses, or from family or friends. It's tempting to feel like the child in the photo, wanting to cover our eyes and disappear, to not have to deal with any of it. Soon after I started vision improvement, I realized I had wanted to shut down my vision because so much negative stimulation was pushing at me.

When I could, I ignored the angry faces and loud noise as I escaped to the peace of the pages of a book. When I had to be around people, I was constantly braced to deal with the onslaught of input entering my eyes, behind thicker and thicker eyeglasses. I've wondered if those thick glasses acted as a shield to keep the world out, to a degree, so I felt less invaded. When I learned that looking at details was a key part of vision improvement, it led to a fundamental change in my habits of looking.

inspector examining something Wearing those strong glasses, I had been accustomed to seeing what I could quickly, then examining that mental image in my head, rather than continuing to seek new fresh visual data from my surroundings. So I often missed things which were right in front of my eyes, because I wasn't really looking at my environment. True to my over-doing nature, when I began to "look at details", I peered and squinted and tried hard to see every speck, straining my vision unnecessarily.

A well-known vision teacher in Colorado often says that doing something the wrong way first will teach you better how to do it correctly. Looking the wrong way is an effort, leading to eyestrain and blurrier vision, so we'll naturally want to do something else. Trying to see all the details in front of me at once was a recipe for frustration and failure. I needed to move my gaze from area to area to see well, easily examining each portion which caught my eye.

eagle The motivation to see, or to see more, rises up because something seems interesting. Maybe it's unexpected movement or a bright color. Vision mostly happens in the brain, not the eyes, and what pulls the brain's attention to the object of focus, then leads our gaze there to examine it further, is our curiosity. What's that? we wonder, looking more closely or more deeply to gather additional information.

Whether we ignore the visual input, like the little girl at the top of the page, or explore to find out more about it, depends on our interest, and how safe we feel. If we're not really interested, like with a boring presentation, we won't be wanting to look at much. If we don't feel safe, say if someone is criticizing us, we won't want to look at the judgmental face in front of us. Do what you can to help yourself feel comfortable, so you can easily let your eyes see and investigate what intrigues you. The visual riches around you could offer learning and entertainment with every glance. The more you look, the more you'll see.
